The Riders outscored the Ice by an aggregate of 18-9 over the three games. <o:p></o:p></H1> The Riders now return to the second round of the Clark Cup playoffs for the third time in four years.<o:p></o:p> <H1 style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in">The sweep of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> marked the first time in team history that the Riders have won a playoff series in three straight games. <o:p></o:p></H1> <H1 style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in">The Riders averaged a league-high six goals per game in round one. Matt Vokes (2-4-6) led the Riders in point scoring in the first round.<o:p></o:p></H1> <H1 style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in">The Riders scored the first goal in each game. Over the course of the entire series the Riders trailed the Ice for just two minutes and nine seconds. In contrast, the Riders held the lead for 127:13.<o:p></o:p></H1> Prior to their opening round win over the Ice, the Riders had scored five goals in a playoff game only once in team history (23 post season games). The Riders scored at least five goals in each of their wins over <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:State>.<o:p></o:p> The Riders have won five straight games overall after closing out the regular season with back-to-back wins over the Green Bay Gamblers.<o:p></o:p> The Steel came back from a two games to none deficit to defeat <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> in five games in the opening round. After the home team won the first four games of that series, Kevin Roeder’s overtime goal gave the Steel a 3-2 victory on the road in game five.<o:p></o:p> The Steel lost a total of four straight games- the final two of the regular season and the first two of the first round before stunning the Black Hawks with three straight victories.<o:p></o:p> Goaltender Shane Connelly was superb in the Steel’s opening round win. Connelly posted a sterling 2.08 goals against average and an equally impressive .930 save percentage while playing all five games against the Black Hawks. Connelly gave up just five goals while backstopping <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> to wins in the final three games of the series. <o:p></o:p> This marks the first time the Steel has won a playoff series since the team arrived in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> in 2000-01.<o:p></o:p> Last year <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> won the East Division regular season title but was toppled in the opening round of the playoffs by the eventual champion Black Hawks in five games. This year, the Steel turned the tables by upending the Black Hawks, the higher seed, in round one.<o:p></o:p> The Steel was off for nearly two full weeks before opening its series with the Black Hawks on April 8. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> completed its regular season schedule on March 26, one week earlier than the rest of the league. <o:p></o:p> The winner of the Cedar Rapids-Chicago series will meet the survivor of the West Division final match-up between the Sioux City Musketeers and Tri-City Storm in the Clark Cup finals.<o:p></o:p> The Riders, who entered the playoffs as the second seed, are now guaranteed home ice advantage through the Clark Cup finals, should they advance. The sudden death goal was Axtell’s second of the night. The Riders’ Gary Steffes tied the game at four with 5:21 left in regulation after the Ice had come from behind to take the lead with three straight goals. The Riders jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one on goals from Axtell, Ray Eichenlaub and Ted Purcell. The Steel broke open a scoreless game with three second period goals and ripped off four more in the third period. Pat Bowen and Eric Slais both notched one goal and one assist, while Kevin Swallow assisted on three goals. David Marshall, Nathan Perkovich and Eric Lampe contributed single goals to the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> cause. Shane Connelly turned aside all 34 <st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City> shots, while the Steel hurled 49 shots at <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> goaltender Joe Grossman.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Thursday, April 14: <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> 6 <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> 3<o:p></o:p> Chris Clackson and Justin Lewandowski both scored twice as the Steel held off the Black Hawks. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> led 4-3 after two periods and put the Hawks away with third period goals from Clackson and David Marshall. The Steel thought they had gained some breathing room when Justin Lewandowski scored at 17:31 of the second period to make the score 4-2. However, a Garrett Regan power play goal brought <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> back within one just 26 seconds later. Early on it appeared the Steel might walk away with it as <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> scored three times- goals from Clackson, Eric Lampe and Lewandowski- in the first nine minutes and forty three seconds of the game. The Hawks responded with goals just over two minutes apart from Jim Jensen and David Meckler to narrow the gap to 3-2 by the end of the first period.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Saturday, April 16: <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> 3 <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> 2 (ot)<o:p></o:p> Kevin Roeder’s goal at 7:20 of overtime gave the Steel the win and ended the Black Hawks’ season. The Steel won despite being outshot 34-22 thanks to a 32-save effort from Shane Connelly. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> twice took the lead in regulation. Eric Slais opened the scoring 10:59 into the game. Matt Arhontas tied it for <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City> at 2:21 of the second period. Jon Ralph’s 5-on-3 power play goal put the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City> back on top at 13:02 of the second.
