Game Summary: April 8, 2005- RoughRiders 7 Indiana 3

Brandon Svendsen recorded the first playoff hat trick in team history as the host RoughRiders opened their best-of-five first round playoff series against the Indiana Ice with a convincing 7-3 win.

The Riders broke the game open with a four goal second period on the way to setting a new team record for most goals in one playoff game.

The Riders already held a 2-1 lead when Shane Lovdahl started the second period onslaught at 3:29 of the middle frame with his second power play goal of the game. Lovdahl’s drive from just inside the blue line sailed past Indiana starting goaltender Alec Richards to extend the Rider lead to 3-1.

Svendsen scored his first of the night on a breakaway at 5:36 of the second to stretch the Rider lead to three goals.

Ted Purcell walked into the goalmouth and lifted the puck under the crossbar at the 13:35 mark of the second to make the score 5-1 and chase Richards from the game.

James Kohout, Richards’ replacement in the Indiana net, was given a rude introduction to the game when Svendsen struck again at 16:23 of the second. Kohout stopped Matt Vokes’ breakaway bid, but Svendsen was on hand to bury the rebound. Svendsen’s second goal enabled the Riders to take a 6-1 lead into the second intermission.

Svendsen would complete the hat trick just 40 seconds into the third period. The first year Rider charged into the goalmouth to shovel the puck past Kohout for the Riders’ seventh goal of the night.

Indiana goals later in the third period from Michal Borovansky (his second of the game) and Tomas Klempa did nothing to affect the outcome.

The Riders first jumped in front when Jon Grabarek swept a rebound home just 2:21 into the first period.

Borovansky provided a quick response for the Ice, however. The Czech wristed puck from the left wing circle to even the score at one at 4:30 of the first.

The Riders were on the power play when Lovdahl put the Cedar Rapids back on top for good at 14:35 of the first. Lovdahl’s drive from the left point sailed past Richards’ glove hand to give the Riders a 2-1 advantage. That strike proved to be the first of six straight Rider goals.
