RoughRider Alum Fallon Named Rookie of the Year in New England College Hockey
<p>April 6, 2005- Former RoughRider goaltender Joe Fallon, now a freshman at the University of Vermont, has won the George Carens Award as Rookie of the Year in Division I college hockey in New England. </p>
<p>Fallon, 20, went 17-10-4 with a 1.96 goals against average, a .921 save percentage and five shutouts for the Catamounts this season. Fallon broke school records for lowest goals against average and most shutouts and posted the second best save percentage in UVM history. </p>
<p>The Carens Award is just the latest honor to come Fallon’s way. The Bemidji, Minnesota, native has also been named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and has been selected to the US College Hockey Online and Insidecollegehockey.com All-Rookie Teams as well as the ECAC All-Rookie Team.</p>
<p>Fallon spent two standout seasons with the RoughRiders before heading to Vermont. In 84 career games as a Rider, Fallon went 45-28-8 with a 2.66 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and six shutouts. Last season Fallon posted some of the best goaltending numbers in the United States Hockey League, going 25-13-2 while turning in a 2.73 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and four shutouts.</p>
<p>Fallon is one of more than 40 former RoughRiders who have gone on to the Division I college ranks since the team’s arrival in Cedar Rapids six years ago. Four former Rider players- Minnesota’s P.J. Atherton and Derek Peltier, Denver’s Ted O’Leary and Colorado College’s James Brannigan- will take part in the NCAA Frozen Four beginning tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio. 14 current RoughRiders have also already made college commitments. </p>
<p>This season’s Riders squad opens its best-of-five opening round Clark Cup playoff series against the Indiana Ice Friday night at 7:05PM at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Riders will be presented the Anderson Cup before that game as the United States Hockey League’s regular season co-champions. The Riders (42-13-5, 89 points) finished the regular season tied for first place overall with the Omaha Lancers.</p>
<p>The Riders’ series with the Ice continues with game two Saturday night at 7:05PM at the ice arena. The Riders and Ice will play game three in Indianapolis next Tuesday. If necessary, game four will take place next Thursday in Indianapolis. If the series goes the distance, the fifth and deciding game would be played on Saturday, April 16, in Cedar Rapids. </p>
<p>First round playoff tickets are currently on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office (261-4625). Playoff ticket prices range from $9 to $18. Tickets for only the first round of the playoffs are currently available.
