RoughRiders to Meet Indiana Ice in Opening Round of Playoffs

April 2, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will meet the Indiana Ice in the first round of the United States Hockey League Clark Cup playoffs.

The Riders will host games one and two of the series on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at 7:05PM. The series will shift to Indianapolis for game three and, if necessary, game four, on Tuesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 14. If a fifth game is required to decide the series, it will be played on Saturday, April 16 at 7:05PM in Cedar Rapids.

While the Riders have long since clinched the USHL’s East Division title, the Ice only secured the fourth and final playoff spot in the division last night. The Ice’s 6-5 overtime loss with the Des Moines Buccaneers, combined with the fifth place Green Bay Gamblers’ 4-1 loss to the Riders last night, enabled the Ice to wrap up fourth place in the east.

The RoughRiders dominated the regular season series with the Ice, going 8-0 against Indiana.

First round playoff tickets are currently on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office (261-4625). Playoff ticket prices range from $9 to $18. Tickets for only the first round of the playoffs are currently available. Tickets for the second and third rounds- should the Riders advance- will go on sale at a later date. First round playoff tickets are already included in season ticket holders’ packages.

Should they advance, the RoughRiders have already clinched home ice advantage for the second round of the playoffs.

The Riders have qualified for the Clark Cup playoffs five straight years. Last season the Riders were defeated three games to one in the first round by the Danville Wings. The Danville franchise moved to Indiana after last season.

The Clark Cup is symbolic of supremacy in American junior hockey and is presented annually to the playoff champions of the USHL, the nation’s only Tier I junior league.

The Riders (41-13-5, 87 points) are tied with the Omaha Lancers for first place overall in the USHL and the Anderson Cup title heading into tonight- the final night of the regular season. The Riders will again take on the Gamblers tonight, while the Lancers take on Des Moines.
