RoughRiders’ Ricci Named Let’s Play Hockey/USHL Offensive Player of the Week for Third Time/Season

March 22, 2005- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders center Rob Ricci has been named the Let’s Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Ricci, the Riders’ captain, earned the honor after scoring two goals and totaling seven points as the Riders won three games in three nights last week.

“Rob’s been leading by example for us all season,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “He’s been so consistent and does a great job at both ends of the ice.”

Ricci picked up one assist in the Riders’ 6-1 win over the Green Bay Gamblers last Thursday, broke loose for two goals and two assists in an 8-2 rout of the Chicago Steel last Friday and added two more assists in a 4-1 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks last Saturday.

Ricci has set a new club record by recording points in his last eleven games (9-8-17). The Brampton, Ontario, native broke the old team record for longest point-scoring streak set by Jon Grabarek, who last season had points in ten straight games.

On the season, Ricci (24-31-55) ranks eighth in the USHL in point scoring and is second on the Riders in points. Ricci also ranks second in the league with seven game winning goals.

Ricci, who will begin his college career at Merrimack next season, was twice named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season. Ricci took home the honor on November 16 and again on January 24.

Ricci’s efforts last week helped the Riders reach 40 wins for the first time in team history and also top 80 points for the first time. The league-leading Riders (40-11-5, 85 points) are in first place overall in the USHL, four points ahead of the Omaha Lancers. The Riders’ magic number for clinching the Anderson Cup regular season title is five. Any combination of points gained in the standings by the RoughRiders or points lost by Omaha totaling five will result in the Riders locking up first place overall for the first time in team history.

The Riders return to action with a pair of road games this week. The Riders will visit the Sioux City Musketeers Friday night at 7:35 before traveling to Kearney, Nebraska, to meet the Tri-City Storm Saturday evening at 7:05.

RoughRiders first round Clark Cup playoff tickets are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office (261-4625). Playoff ticket prices range from $9 to $18. Tickets for only the first round of the playoffs are currently available. Tickets for the second and third rounds- should the Riders advance- will go on sale at a later date.

The first round of the playoffs will start no earlier than Tuesday, April 5 and will end no later than Saturday, April 16. All playoff series are best-of-five. The RoughRiders have already clinched home ice advantage in the first and- should they advance- second rounds of the playoffs.
