RoughRiders Break Team Records for Wins, Points

March 3, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders broke team records for most wins and most points in a season with a 3-1 victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede in Sioux Falls last night.

Last night’s win was the Riders’ thirty-fifth of the season, eclipsing the old record of 34 victories set last year. The Riders have now reached 75 points, topping the old club mark of 73 points established in 2001-02.

“Our guys have just continued to work hard and have fun all season,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “This accomplishment is certainly something we’re proud of, but we know we still have a lot more work to do this season.”

Justin Abdelkader scored two goals for the Riders last night, while captain Rob Ricci provided what proved to be the game winner in the second period. Alex Stalock stopped 21 Sioux Falls shots to earn the win in goal.

The victory over the Stampede enabled the Riders (35-9-5) to overtake the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the United States Hockey League. The Riders now lead the Lancers by one point in the battle for the Anderson Cup (regular season title).

The Riders have already clinched the USHL’s East Division- the first division title in team history.

Last night’s win improved the Riders’ league-best road record to 19-3-1. The Riders are one road victory shy of tying the USHL record for most away wins in a single season.

The Riders’ next game is a showdown with the Lancers in Council Bluffs this Saturday night. That game is the third of four in a row away from home for the Riders. The Riders next play on home ice on Friday evening, March 11, when the Stampede visits the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena for a 7:05PM contest.

Tickets for the March 11 game and all remaining Rider regular season home dates are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.
