RoughRiders Clinch East Division Title

February 27, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders clinched the United States Hockey League’s East Division title with a 3-1 win in Green Bay last night. The win over the Gamblers gives the Riders the first division championship in the team’s six-year history.

With last night’s victory the Riders improved to 34-9-5 on the season and tied team records for most wins and points (73) in a season.

“This is certainly a fine achievement for us and something all of our guys should be proud of,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “But at the same time we know we still have a lot left that we want to accomplish this season.”

Goaltender Dan Tormey set a personal USHL career high and a RoughRider season high with 48 saves in the division-clinching victory. Brandon Svendsen’s first period power play goal snapped a 1-1 tie and would prove to be the game winner. Matt Vokes and Jon Grabarek also scored for Cedar Rapids.

The Riders’ win, combined with the Omaha Lancers’ 5-4 overtime loss last night in Lincoln, also enabled Cedar Rapids to take over sole possession of first place overall in the USHL, one point ahead of Omaha.

The Riders locked up first place in the east after finishing second each of the last four seasons. The Riders finished just one point behind the division champion Chicago Steel last year.

The Waterloo Black Hawks are 26 points behind the Riders in the standings but still have a mathematical- if not realistic- chance of finishing in a tie for first in the division with Cedar Rapids. However, in that highly unlikely scenario, the Riders would win the tie breaker with the Black Hawks because they have already clinched the season series between the two clubs.

The Riders will try to set new team records for wins and points when they return to action with a game in Sioux Falls against the Stampede this Wednesday night at 7:05. That game is the second of four in a row away from home for the Riders. The Riders next play on home ice on Friday evening, March 11, when the Stampede visits the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena for a 7:05 contest.

Tickets for the March 11 game and all remaining Rider regular season home dates are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days. Ticket prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 including a 50-cent facility fee.
| Posted on Sunday, February 27, 2005 (Archive on Sunday, February 27, 2005)
