Game Summary: February 18, 2005- Des Moines 5 RoughRiders 3

John McCarthy and Alex Laseen had two goals and two assists apiece as the Des Moines Buccaneers defeated the host RoughRiders 5-3 Friday night.

The Riders fell behind 3-0 and never fully recovered. Alex Stalock surrendered the first three Des Moines goals before being replaced in the Rider net by Dan Tormey in the second period.

The Riders did battle back late in the second period to close the gap to 3-2. The Riders got on the scoreboard for the first time when Jon Grabarek beat Des Moines goaltender Troy Davenport (25 saves) with a shot from the right wing circle at 15:31 of the second.

The Riders pulled within one when Erik Felde’s drive from the left wing circle whistled in under the cross bar with just one minute, forty-two seconds remaining in the period.

The Buccaneers bounced back at 6:08 of the third period when Jon Carter scored what would prove to be the game winner. Chad Rau charged down the left wing to the side of the Rider net and slipped the puck to Carter shoveled it home while falling down in the slot.

The Bucs were on the power play when Laseen scored his second goal of the game to make the score 5-2 at the 9:04 mark of the third. Laseen buried the rebound after Tormey stopped a McCarthy bid.

At 13:06 of the third Brent Cornelius walked into the left wing circle and fired the puck home just inside the far post to narrow the Des Moines lead to a pair, but the Riders would get no closer.

The Bucs had first jumped in front 6:09 into the game when McCarthy’s shot from the top of the left wing circle broke in off of Stalock’s glove.

Laseen beat Stalock with a backhander from the slot to extend the lead to 2-0 at 2:37 of the second period.

A McCarthy power play goal at 6:12 of the second gave the Bucs a 3-0 edge and set the stage for Stalock’s departure. McCarthy pounced on the rebound after the Rider netminder turned aside a Chad Rau drive from the high slot.
| Posted on Saturday, February 19, 2005 (Archive on Saturday, February 19, 2005)
