That victory, combined with the Green Bay Gamblers’ 5-1 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks the same evening, also enabled the Riders to clinch their fifth straight Clark Cup playoff berth.<o:p></o:p></H1> The Riders’ run of road success was ended last Saturday night when they fell 3-2 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place>. That loss was the Riders’ first away setback since a 5-1 loss to the Tri-City Storm on November 6.<o:p></o:p> The Riders have made the post season for a fifth straight year. <o:p></o:p> The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="24" Month="4">24-4-3</st1:date> in their last 31 games, but have gone just <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="3" Month="3">3-3-1</st1:date> in their last seven outings.<o:p></o:p> The Riders are one point ahead of the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the United States Hockey League heading into tomorrow night’s showdown between the two teams. The Riders have one game in hand on the Lancers. <o:p></o:p> The Riders lead the East Division by a whopping 24 points over second place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> At <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="17" Month="3">17-3-1</st1:date> on the season, the Riders have the league’s best road record. The Riders have a better winning percentage on the road (.833) than at home, where they have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="14" Month="4">14-4-3</st1:date> (.738)<o:p></o:p> Heading into tomorrow night’s game with the West Division-leading Lancers, the Riders have picked up at least one point in their last nine games (6-0-3) against teams from the west.<o:p></o:p> The Riders rank as the USHL’s best offensive team and second best defensive club. The Riders score an average of 3.9 goals per game and give up an average of just 2.6 goals per contest. The Riders top the league in both special teams categories. The Riders lead the way on both the power play (22.3 percent) and on the penalty kill (86.6 percent).<o:p></o:p> A number of the USHL’s top talents will be in action at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena this week. The league’s top six point scorers (<st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City>’s Dan Reidel and Brock Trotter, <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City>’s Corey Carlson and Trevor Smith, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>’ Chad Rau and the Riders’ Ted Purcell) all skate for one of the four teams that will play at the ice arena in the next six days<o:p></o:p> The Lancers bounced back from a 6-5 shootout loss last Friday in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> with a 4-1 victory the following evening in Tri-City. <o:p></o:p> The Lancers are unbeaten in regulation (5-0-2) in their last seven games and have suffered just one regulation defeat in their last 14 games (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="1" Month="10">10-1-3</st1:date>). <o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> is the league’s stingiest defensive team. The Lancers give up an average of just 2.5 goals per game. The Lancers rank behind only the RoughRiders in goal scoring (3.8 per game) and power play efficiency (20.1 percent).<o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers are in last place overall. The Bucs’ 6-5 shootout win over <st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City> last Friday came on the heels of a 4-2 victory February 5 at <st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State>, marking the first time this season <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> has won consecutive games. The brief winning streak came to an end last Saturday as the Bucs were shutout 2-0 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers surrender 4.2 goals per game, far and away the most in the league. <o:p></o:p> The Bucs acquired forward Tomas Petruska from the Waterloo Black Hawks in exchange for former Rider forward Sean Muncy last week. <o:p></o:p> Chad Rau (21-26-47), the Bucs’ top scorer, is currently playing for the <st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region> under-18 team at the Five Nations Tournament in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Gothenberg</st1:City>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Sweden</st1:country-region></st1:place>. Rau is due back before the Bucs visit <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place> Friday.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> is the hottest team in the USHL. The Stars have won six straight games and eight of their last nine. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> has suffered just one regulation defeat in its last 12 games (<st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="1" Month="10">10-1-1</st1:date>) since suffering a 2-1 loss to the Riders on January 8.<o:p></o:p> The Stars scored a pair of road wins last weekend. <st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City> downed Tri-City 4-2 last Friday and edged <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> in a shootout 3-2 last Saturday.<o:p></o:p> The Stars’ Dan Reidel (22-34-56) leads the league in points and assists and is tied for third in goals.<o:p></o:p> The Stars are the most penalized team in the league. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place> is assessed an average of 30.7 minutes in penalties per game. The Stars are the only USHL team to spend over 30 minute per night in the box. <o:p></o:p> The Stars’ Jared Boll leads the league in penalty minutes (224), while teammate Ryan Hohl ranks fourth (173).
