The Riders routed the Des Moines Buccaneers 8-4 last Thursday in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Urbandale</st1:City></st1:place>. Two nights later the Riders were shutout 1-0 by the Waterloo Black Hawks on home ice.<o:p></o:p> The Riders are also closing in on a fifth straight berth in the Clark Cup playoffs. The Riders’ magic number for clinching a post season spot is four. Any combination of points gained by the Riders or lost by the fifth place team in the East Division- Green Bay- totaling four will result in the Riders locking up a playoff spot. Thus, if the Riders defeat <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> Friday, and the Gamblers lose their game against <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City></st1:place> in regulation Friday, the Riders would seal their place in the post season.<o:p></o:p> Last Thursday’s win was the Riders’ twelfth straight on the road. With that win, the Riders broke the league record for longest single season road winning streak. The Riders snapped a record set by the Rochester Mustangs from October 18 through <st1:date w:st="on" Year="1986" Day="13" Month="12">December 13, 1986</st1:date>. The Riders also tied the record for longest overall road winning streak, a mark also set by the Mustangs. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Rochester</st1:City></st1:place> won 12 road games in a row over parts of two seasons from February 28 through <st1:date w:st="on" Year="1986" Day="13" Month="12">December 13, 1986</st1:date>.<o:p></o:p> Last Saturday’s loss marked the first time the Riders have been shutout this season. In fact, prior to Saturday, the Riders had not been shutout in the regular season since suffering a 2-0 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers on <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="9" Month="3">March 9, 2003</st1:date>. In between the Riders had scored at least one goal in 107 consecutive regular season games.<o:p></o:p> The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="2" Month="2">2-2-1</st1:date> in their last five games. The Riders are <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="23" Month="3">23-3-3</st1:date> over their last 29 outings. <o:p></o:p> The Riders are two points ahead of the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the United States Hockey League. The Riders have one game in hand on the Lancers. The Riders lead the East Division by a whopping 23 points over second place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> Last Friday’s win was the Riders’ thirtieth of the season. They notched their thirtieth win earlier this season than in any other season in team history. Prior to this season, the Riders had never hit the 30-win plateau in fewer than 54 games, a feat they accomplished last season.<o:p></o:p> At <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="16" Month="2">16-2-1</st1:date> on the season, the Riders have the league’s best road record. The Riders have a better winning percentage on the road (.861) than at home, where they have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="14" Month="4">14-4-3</st1:date> (.738)<o:p></o:p> The Riders trailed the Bucs 1-0 in the first period before rolling to the win last Thursday. Six of the Riders’ last nine wins have been of the come-from-behind variety. On the season, the Riders have a total of twelve come-from-behind wins.<o:p></o:p> Saturday’s loss was just the Riders’ fourth in 28 games against East Division opponents this season.<o:p></o:p> This weekend the Riders will complete a stretch that sees them play ten of eleven games against East Division opposition.<o:p></o:p> Last Saturday’s shootout setback ended the Riders’ five game winning streak against West Division opposition. The Riders have picked up at least one point in their last nine games (6-0-3) against the west.<o:p></o:p> The Riders rank as the USHL’s best offensive team and second best defensive club. The Riders score an average of 3.9 goals per game and give up an average of just 2.5 goals per contest. The Riders top the league in both special teams categories. The Riders lead the way on both the power play (21.1 percent) and on the penalty kill (88.2 percent).<o:p></o:p> The Chicago Steel snapped a season-worst four game losing streak with a 4-3 overtime win over the Omaha Lancers Saturday. That dramatic victory came one night after <st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City> fell 4-3 to the Stars in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Lincoln</st1:City></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p> Saturday’s victory over the Lancers, combined with the Indiana Ice’s loss to <st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City> Saturday evening, enabled the Steel to move two points ahead of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> and take over sole possession of second place in the USHL’s East Division.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> has gone just <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="12" Month="7">7-12-1</st1:date> in its last 20 games after starting the season <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2000" Day="10" Month="13">13-10-0</st1:date>.<o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> has lost four straight home games.<o:p></o:p> The Steel has struggled to score goals at times this season. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> ranks ninth in the league in goals per game (2.6). <o:p></o:p> An often punchless power play is one factor in the Steel’s offensive struggles. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> ranks second to last in the league on the power play, cashing in on just 11.5 percent of its man advantages.<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks bounced back from a 5-1 loss last Friday in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Omaha</st1:City></st1:place> with last Saturday’s win over the Riders.<o:p></o:p> The Hawks are two points behind third place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> in the East Division standings. The Hawks five games in hand on the Ice.<o:p></o:p> The Hawks have won three of their last four games.
