RoughRiders Win Twelfth Straight on Road, Break USHL Record

February 4, 2005- The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers 8-4 last night in Urbandale to set a new United States Hockey League record with their twelfth straight road win.

The Riders, who have not lost away from home since suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Tri-City Storm on November 6 in Kearney, Nebraska, have eclipsed the league record for most consecutive road wins in one season and also tied the league record for longest overall away winning streak.

The Riders have snapped a single season record set by the Rochester Mustangs, who won eleven straight road games from October 18 through December 13, 1986.

The Mustangs won 12 straight road games over parts of two seasons from February 28 through December 13, 1986. The Riders will try to break that overall record when they go for their thirteenth straight road victory next Friday against the Chicago Steel in Bensenville, Illinois.

“This is something our team should be very proud of. There have been a lot of very good hockey teams and a lot of great players in this league over the last 19 years since this record was set,” said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. “Our players should be very proud of this accomplishment and of how hard they have battled to achieve it.”

Eight different Riders scored in last night’s win. Six of the Riders’ goals came on special teams as the Riders scored four power play goals and tied a team record with two shorthanded goals.

Since last losing an away game nearly three months ago, the Riders have picked up three road wins against both the Buccaneers and the Indiana Ice, two against the Waterloo Blacks Hawks and one over each of the Sioux Falls Stampede, Sioux City Musketeers, Lincoln Stars and Green Bay Gamblers. The Riders have outscored their opponents 45-27 over the course of their last dozen road games.

On the season, the Riders have gone 16-2-1 on the road, far and away the best away record in the league. In fact, the Riders have a better winning percentage on the road (.868) than at home, where they have gone 14-3-3 (.775).

Ironically, both the first and final wins of Rochester’s 12-game road winning streak came over the North Iowa Huskies, the club that would move to Cedar Rapids and become the RoughRiders in 1999.

Last night’s win improved the league-leading Riders to 30-5-4 overall and enabled the Riders to hit the 30-victory plateau earlier this season than in any other season in the team’s six-year Cedar Rapids history.

With 64 points the Riders are now five points ahead of the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the USHL. The Riders lead the East Division by a whopping 25 points over second place Chicago.

The Riders are also closing in on a fifth straight berth in the Clark Cup playoffs. The Riders’ magic number for clinching a post season spot is eight. Any combination of points gained by the Riders or lost by the fifth place team in the East Division- Green Bay- totaling eight will result in the Riders locking up a playoff spot.

The high-flying Riders return to action tomorrow night on home ice when they take on the arch rival Waterloo Black Hawks at 7:05PM.

Tickets for tomorrow night’s game and all remaining RoughRiders home dates are now on sale at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena ticket office. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at (319) 261-4625 or in person at the ice arena. The ticket office is open from noon to 5:00PM on weekdays and from noon through the end of the second period on game days.
