The Riders defeated <st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State> 5-4 Friday and fell 5-4 in a shootout to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> Saturday. <o:p></o:p> The Riders have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="13" Month="2">13-2-1</st1:date> in their last 16 games and <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="22" Month="2">22-2-3</st1:date> in their last 27 outings.<o:p></o:p> The Riders are three points ahead of the Omaha Lancers in the race for first place overall in the United States Hockey League. The Riders have one game in hand on the Lancers. The Riders lead the East Division by a whopping 23 points over second place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place>. <o:p></o:p> The Riders are closing in on clinching a berth in the Clark Cup playoffs for a fifth straight year. The Riders’ magic number for securing a playoff spot is ten. That is, any combination of points gained by the Riders or lost by the fifth place team in the East Division, the Green Bay Gamblers, totaling ten will result in the Riders securing a post season berth.<o:p></o:p> Last Friday’s victory guaranteed the Riders a fifth straight winning season.<o:p></o:p> The Riders are one win away from 30 victories. They are poised to notch their thirtieth win earlier this season than in any other season in team history. Prior to this season, the Riders had never hit the 30-win plateau in fewer than 54 games, a feat they accomplished last season.<o:p></o:p> This Thursday in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Urbandale</st1:City></st1:place> the Riders will try to break the league record for longest single season road winning streak. The Riders have won eleven straight road games, tying the record set by the Rochester Mustangs from October 18 through <st1:date w:st="on" Year="1986" Day="13" Month="12">December 13, 1986</st1:date>. The Mustangs also hold the record for longest overall road winning streak. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Rochester</st1:City></st1:place> won 12 road games in a row over parts of two seasons from February 28 through <st1:date w:st="on" Year="1986" Day="13" Month="12">December 13, 1986</st1:date>.<o:p></o:p> At <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="15" Month="2">15-2-1</st1:date> on the season, the Riders have the league’s best road record. The Riders have a better winning percentage on the road (.861) than at home, where they have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="14" Month="3">14-3-3</st1:date> (.775)<o:p></o:p> Last Friday was the fourth consecutive Friday on which the Riders came from behind to win after trailing at the end of the second period. Five of the Riders’ last eight wins have been of the come-from-behind variety. On the season, the Riders have a total of eleven come-from-behind wins.<o:p></o:p> The Riders played six straight games against East Division foes before facing <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls-</st1:City></st1:place> a West Division club- last Saturday. The Riders will play their next four games against division opponents.<o:p></o:p> The <st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City> (January 2) and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> (October 23 and January 22) are responsible for the Riders’ only three losses to East Division foes this season. <o:p></o:p> Last Saturday’s shootout setback ended the Riders’ five game winning streak against West Division opposition. The Riders have picked up at least one point in their last nine games (6-0-3) against the west.<o:p></o:p> The Riders now rank as the USHL’s best offensive team and second best defensive club. The Riders score an average of 3.87 goals per game and give up an average of just 2.53 goals per contest. The Riders top the league in both special teams categories. The Riders lead the way on both the power play (20 percent) and on the penalty kill (87.5 percent).<o:p></o:p> The Des Moines Buccaneers split a pair of games last weekend. The Bucs posted just their sixth win last Friday, defeating <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Sioux Falls</st1:City></st1:place> 5-2. <st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City> fell 6-3 to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> the following evening. <o:p></o:p> The Bucs are ten points behind fifth place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Green Bay</st1:City></st1:place> in the East Division.<o:p></o:p> Interim coach Regg Simon is <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2001" Day="13" Month="3">3-13-1</st1:date> since taking over behind the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place> bench following the December 1 resignation of Bob Ferguson. <o:p></o:p> The Buccaneers surrender 4.2 goals per game, far and away the most in the league. <o:p></o:p> The productivity of Chad Rau has been one of the few bright spots for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. Rau (19-25-44) is tied for second in the league in points and is tied for fifth in goals and assists. <o:p></o:p> Sean Muncy, whom the Riders dealt to the Bucs after the first game of the season, has thrived since arriving in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Des Moines</st1:City></st1:place>. Muncy, who played two full seasons in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cedar Rapids</st1:City></st1:place>, is second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 31 points.<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks won back-to-back games last weekend. <st1:City w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:City> won 4-1 in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> last Friday and dropped Tri-City 3-1 last Saturday. Those two victories came on the heels of a season worst six-game winless streak (0-4-2).<o:p></o:p> The Hawks have gone <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2003" Day="8" Month="10">10-8-3</st1:date> in their last 21 games after starting the season <st1:date w:st="on" Year="2002" Day="8" Month="5">5-8-2</st1:date> in their first 15 games.<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks are just two points behind <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">Indiana</st1:State></st1:place> in the race for third place in the East Division and have played five fewer games than the Ice. The Hawks are also just four points behind second place <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> and have four games in hand on the Steel.<o:p></o:p> The Black Hawks will face both of the USHL’s division leaders this weekend.
