Game Summary: January 29, 2005- Sioux Falls 5 RoughRiders 4 (so)

Penalty shot goals from Patrick Mullen and Joe Vitale gave the Sioux Falls Stampede a wild 5-4 shootout win over the host RoughRiders Saturday night.

The Riders, who failed to score on four penalty shots, did earn one point for the shootout loss. The Riders were able to pick up that point thanks to Ray Eichenlaub’s tying goal with just 22.5 seconds left in regulation.

Eichenlaub wristed the puck home through traffic from the right point to tie the score at four and force overtime. A scoreless five minute sudden death period brought the shootout.

The Stampede took the lead into the final minute of regulation after Andrew Carroll snapped a 3-3 tied at 8:34 of the third period. Carroll scored what was his second goal of the game with a backhander from the doorstep.

Carroll’s goal came just 27 seconds after referee Adam Fish controversially disallowed what the Riders thought was a go ahead goal of their own. Ted Purcell appeared to shovel a loose puck over the goal line from close range, but Fish ruled no goal after discussing the call with the goal judge.

Carroll scored his first goal with just 23.7 seconds left in the second period, firing the puck past Rider goaltender Alex Stalock from the slot to tie the score at three.

The Riders took the lead deep into the second period after outscoring the Stampede 3-2 in a wild five minute twenty second span early in the period.

Sioux Falls’ Justin Milo started the fireworks just 30 seconds into the second. Milo snapped the puck into the back of the net from point blank range to give the Stampede a 1-0 lead.

The Riders quickly responded with goals just 44 seconds apart from Rob Ricci and Justin Abdelkader. At 2:07 the Riders tied the game at one when Ricci tucked the rebound in after Sioux Falls goaltender John Murray sprawled to stop a Brandon Svendsen bid.

The Riders took the lead at the 2:51 mark when Abdelkader converted a Greg Collins centering pass on a 2-on-1 rush.

The Stampede’s Patrick Mullen tied the game again a mere 56 seconds after the Riders moved in front. Mullen raced into the left wing circle and snapped the puck between Stalock’s pads to even the score at two apiece.

The Riders retook the lead and capped off the five goal free-for-all on an Erik Felde shorthanded goal at 5:50 of the second. Felde raced into the Sioux Falls slot and rifled and Svendsen centering feed in before Murray could move across the goalmouth.

Box Score
