Game Summary: January 28, 2005- RoughRiders 5 Indiana 4

Ray Eichenlaub scored the power play game winner at 13:07 of the third period as the host RoughRiders came from behind to defeat the Indiana Ice 5-4 Friday night.

Eichenlaub’s was the Riders third unanswered third period goal as Cedar Rapids battled back to erase a 4-2 deficit. Eichenlaub pounced on a loose puck in the right wing circle and blasted it under the cross bar for his second goal of the game.

Goals from Justin Abdelkader (his second of the night) and Brandon Svendsen earlier in the third wiped out the Ice’s two goal lead.

The Riders were on the power play when Abdelakder crashed the net and jammed the puck home to cut the Indiana lead to 4-3 at 6:12.

The Riders evened the scored when Svendsen barreled into the goalmouth and knocked the puck in from point blank range at 9:48.

Indiana was able to enter the third with a seemingly comfortable two goal cushion after Eddie Del Grosso scored with just 1:40 left in the second period. Del Grosso worked a give-and-go with Tomas Klempa (who assisted on all four Ice goals) and snapped the puck past Rider starting goaltender Dan Tormey from the right wing circle.

Tormey would be replaced by Alex Stalock at the start of the third period after giving up four goals on 14 Ice shots.

Del Grosso’s goal stalled the Riders’ momentum after Cedar Rapids controlled play for much of the second period. The Riders were able to turn that second period pressure into a goal at 13:18 when Abdelkader scored his first of the evening. Abdelkader crashed the net and swept the rebound under Indiana goaltender James Kohout after Kohout stopped Greg Collins’ initial bid.

Abdlelakder’s goal trimmed the deficit to 3-2 after Brian Gifford had given the Ice its first two goal lead of the night with power play goal early in the second period. Gifford buried the rebound at the 1:53 mark after Tormey stopped a Del Grosso blue line blast.

Gifford’s goal was Indiana’s third in a row. Ryan Peckskamp struck twice in the first period to enable the Ice to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Peckskamp first found the net at 13:32 of the first when he snapped a wrist shot from the top of the right wing circle over Tormey’s right shoulder. At 16:11 Peckskamp fired a bad angle shot home on the short side to give the Ice its first lead of the game.

Eichenlaub had opened the scoring 3:04 into the game with first of his two power play goals. The Rider defenseman charged in from the blue line to turn in a Ted Purcell centering pass from the edge of the crease. Eichenlaub’s second goal would prove easily the more memorable of the two.
